I currently have the privilege of working as senior patent counsel for Agility Robotics. We build multi-purpose robots powered by artificial intelligence that do useful work in human-centric environments. I'm constantly inspired by the potential of our technology. My role at Agility is to prepare and prosecute patent applications and to work with engineers to identify inventions. I also develop internal systems related to managing our intellectual property. My technical areas of practice include software (e.g., control, planning, and perception), hardware (e.g., power, actuators, and end effectors), and industrial design.
PATENT LAW / NATIONAL FIRM
I practiced patent prosecution for seven years at Perkins Coie, a national law firm with over 1,000 attorneys. My first four and a half years with Perkins Coie were at the Seattle office, followed by two and a half years at the Portland, Oregon office. All of my annual reviews were strongly positive. My technical fields of practice included semiconductor fabrication, medical devices, chemical processes, audio equipment, industrial equipment, tissue-processing systems, wood products, lasers, and software. I was also a go-to expert for issues related to design patent prosecution. My work product included patent applications (several hundred), office action responses, foreign associate instruction letters, appeal briefs, right-to-practice opinions, invalidity opinions, design-around recommendations, enforcement recommendations, landscape assessments, and due-diligence reports. I managed complex portfolios of patent assets and developed innovative portfolio-wide prosecution strategies. Outside of the patent group, I was active in the Firm's pro bono and community service work, including as chair of the Portland pro bono committee.
PATENT LAW / BOUTIQUE FIRM
Before joining Agility, I practiced for a short time at Fortem IP in partnership with several former colleagues from Perkins Coie. I prepared patent applications and managed patent portfolios for Agility (as a client at the time) and several medical device companies. I was recruited to join Agility after its $150M series B. I highly recommend Fortem to any company seeking quality patent counsel.
PATENT LAW / SOLO PRACTICE
Between working at Klarquist Sparkman and Perkins Coie, I practiced patent prosecution as a solo attorney for two main clients—a consumer products company and a laser company. My work product for these clients included patent applications, office action responses, patentability opinions, right-to-practice opinions, design-around recommendations, and enforcement recommendations. Both clients followed me from Klarquist Sparkman and stayed with me throughout my time at Perkins Coie.
PATENT LAW / BOUTIQUE FIRM
After finishing law school, I practiced patent prosecution and patent litigation for about four years at Klarquist, a boutique intellectual property law firm in Portland, Oregon. My technical fields of practice included nanotechnology, wood products, chemical processes, hydrogen fuel cells, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices. My work product included patent applications, office action responses, foreign associate instruction letters, patentability opinions, right-to-practice opinions, and litigation briefs.
PROCESS ENGINEERING / SEMICONDUCTOR
Before law school, I worked for Motorola as a semiconductor process engineer in Austin, Texas. My group managed defect inspection, metrology, and yield-enhancement at MOS13, Motorola's most advanced manufacturing facility at the time.
